Not so long ago, there was a controversy on a T206 Christy Mattewson Portrait pose
with Red Hindu back. T206 collectors consider Mattewson
Portrait pose can only be found with Brown Hindu back since data has
proven Brown Hindu and Red Hindu
back can not be found with the same pose.
Experienced collectors have suspicion on the authenticity of that Mattewson Portrait Red Hindu
back specimen. Such suspicious was understandable, since the same specimen has changed hand at least
twice within two months and one seller was even willing to sell the card lower than his purchased price.
Recently, the card owner submitted the card to PSA and received a grade 7. However, many collectors
still disagree the decision made by PSA and suggested the card owner to re-submit the card to SGC.
At last, the card got slabbed and received a SGC-50 (as shown above).
Such Christy Mattewson Portrait pose with Red Hindu back specimen has
proven to be authenticated. It may lead to the possibility of other T206s with
Brown Hindu back can also be found with Red Hindu
back and vice versa. However, the existence of this unique specimen may only fall into the back printing
error category until we could find a few more similar examples. By that time, we may need to
re-write the backing theory of the Brown/Red Hindu backs combination.
