T206 Cy Young with Front/Back Miscut SGC-20 sold for $10,200
Robert Edwards Auction (Oct 19, 2014)
Extremely unusual and distinctive T206 card of legendary Hall of Famer Cy Young (portrait) of the Cleveland
Naps with an extreme factory printing error. The card has a severe factory miscut on the front and back,
featuring part of Young's torso (with "Cleveland" across his uniform) and the complete nameplate at the top
of the card. Young's characteristic portrait image with a bold green background appears underneath. This is
about as extreme as a T206 printing miscut can get! In our many years, we have only offered a few of these
severe factory miscuts, but we have never offered one featuring a subject as significant as Cy Young. When
it comes to the T206 set, which is the most highly collected of all vintage-card sets, anything unusual
(especially if it might in any way shed light on the mysteries of how the T206 set was printed) is of great
note. This is an extremely rare and unusual printing anomaly that can easily be appreciated at a glance. As
collectors have become more sophisticated, there has been a growing appreciation for all great rarities and
unusual cards associated with the landmark T206 set. This is a fascinating printing error. Recently discovered
as part of an old-time original-owner tobacco-card collection, this card is entirely new to the modern
collecting world. Graded FAIR 20 by SGC (strictly due to the severe miscut), the card is otherwise VG+, with
a crisp image, bold colors, even rounding to the corners, and a faint wrinkle at top. Value is always subjective,
but in this case, because of its uniqueness, there is no consensus on value for this card. We are confident the
auction process will provide clarity. This is a tremendous printing error of Hall of Famer Cy Young which would
be a worthy addition to any T206, Cy Young, or error-card collection.
Final Bid with Buyer's Premium (20%): $10,200
