Circa 1910 Piedmont Cigarettes Tobacco Pack Carton sold for $19,200

Robert Edward Auctions (Dec 8, 2024)

Lot #448: Circa 1910 Piedmont Cigarettes Tobacco Pack Carton sold for $19,200

Presented is an extremely rare and newly discovered original outer carton of Piedmont Cigarettes dating from the era of T206 tobacco cards! According to advanced tobacco ephemera collectors, this is the ONLY known example of a Piedmont Cigarettes original carton. Manufactured by "The American Tobacco Co.," the carton originally housed fifty packages of Piedmont cigarettes. It is interesting to note that this carton was also used to market Fatima Cigarettes as well, as two "Fatima" labels have been affixed to the carton's top lid and one side panel. This remarkable rarity was discovered recently at an estate in Richmond, Virginia, located ten miles away from the American Tobacco Company factory. Amazingly, the carton included a total of thirteen original packs, seven of which were still sealed and unopened (no cellophane wrapper intact), while the remaining six were opened (tax stamp broken). Twelve of the thirteen packs are featured in this current auction. Our consignor is keeping one unopened pack for his personal collection. The outer carton (8.5 x 6 x 3 inches) displays creases, moderate staining, and a few small tears. In Fair condition overall.

Lot #447: Circa 1910 Piedmont Cigarettes T206-Era Tobacco Pack Collection (6) sold for $28,800

Offered is a newly discovered collection of six packs of Piedmont Cigarettes dating from the era of T206 tobacco cards! This remarkable group was discovered recently at an estate in Richmond, Virginia, located ten miles away from the American Tobacco Company factory. Amazingly, the find featured a total of thirteen original packs, seven of which were still sealed and unopened (no cellophane wrapper intact), while the remaining six (offered here) were opened (tax stamp broken). Twelve of the thirteen packs are featured in this current auction. Our consignor is keeping one unopened pack for his personal collection. As most T206 collectors are aware, the Piedmont brand is the most common of all advertising backs. Not surprisingly, the popularity of the brand has resulted in more packages having survived compared to the other brands represented in the T-206 set, but they are by no means common. Each package measures 1-5/8 x 2-7/8 x 5/8 inches and five of the six contain the original cigarettes. While the seals are broken the packs remains in Very Good condition overall. Total: 6 packs.
